Before a week long trip in Wales I decided to call up fellow Leading Courses ambassador Alex Wright to venture down and play his home course just outside Bristol and very pleased to have made the journey! Burnham & Berrow is home to two courses, one 9 and one 18 hole. We started with the 9 hole course in the morning and what a great little loop.

The first hole is a great start, a challenging left to right par 4 with the wind blowing off the channel right across you. The second is no let up with a pretty narrow par 4 bending to the left this time. Again the 4th is a very narrow par 5 with no room for error. The 6th is an awesome hole and stroke 1. Only a 280 meter par 4 but with plenty of undulations on a thin strip of a fairway followed by a dip before a raised green, a hole that would be welcome on any top links course. The 7th is similar and the 8th a lovely little par 3, only a flick with the wedge at 90 meters downhill but everything off the green and if you miss you have a devilish chip to get back on.

One of the best 9 holes courses I’ve played, in great condition and was very quiet for a Saturday morning. We managed to get a very brisk round done in time for lunch and the Championship in the afternoon.
