Situated just to the north of Amsterdam and wedged in between Houtrak and Spaarnwoude Golf Clubs is the Amsterdamse, one of the oldest golf coursers in the Netherlands and certainly my favourite in the Amsterdam area of those that I’ve played so far.
A parkland course littered with water hazards, the Amsterdamse is a nice blend of not being overly tight and difficult but also requiring some thought on shot selection to avoid the strategically placed hazards.
Playing on a Monday afternoon the course was nice and quiet and looking in great condition. I’d played De Pan the week before and this was in far better condition and half the price!
The course itself is relatively flat, as are most in the Netherlands but has subtle and intriguing undulations to the fairways with slight twists and turns throughout. Starting with a relatively straight 340 meter par 4 and a flat 170 meter par 3 you’re eased into the round before being tested with a longer par 5 with water running down the right hand side of the fairway.
The 6th was one of the prettier holes on the course, a 135 meter par 3 with water short right of the green but what makes it so pretty is wooden walls of the water hazard. The type of features that set it apart from your average course. The 8th was another favourite of mine, a dog-legging par 4 with a hazard short left of the green but the fairway all sloping down towards the hazard made it a tricky hole to navigate, especially with the raised green. They’ve done a great job of maximising the terrain they have and making it interesting.
The 9th and 18th greens sit in front of the traditional clubhouse that has clearly been modernised. At €110 for visitor it is quite steep but worth a visit if you’re passing through the Netherlands or this area of Amsterdam. The practice facilities are great, there’s a wide open range with the opportunity to hit off grass and separate putting & chipping greens closer to the 1st tee.
