Back in the days I was living in London, I played Wellshurst Golf & Country Club with a group of friends during a weekend trip out of the city, a great option for a relaxed round away from the city bustle.

Set in the beautiful East Sussex countryside near Hailsham, the course has a friendly, laid-back feel. As a par 70 it isn’t the longest course, just under 5,400 meters, but it keeps you thinking. With tight fairways, well-placed bunkers, and a few water hazards that can catch you out if you're not paying attention. The standout for us was the par 5 16th, which dares you to go for it over a sizable water feature, exactly the kind of challenge that sparks a bit of friendly competition.

The facilities were more than enough for a casual day out. The driving range was handy for a quick warm-up, and the clubhouse—with its views of the South Downs—was a comfortable spot for a post round drink. For £35 a round Wellshurst is a solid option for Londoners looking to mix countryside views and golf that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Would happily return.
