Royal Cape is the oldest golf course in South Africa and grateful to call my home course in South Africa when migrating for the winter months. Set in the heart of Cape Towns southern suburbs, it is in my opinion the best parkland course in the city.
The clubhouse has a lovely, old colonial feel with an open terraced area cornering the practice putting green with the 1st tee set right behind. Whilst there isn't a lot of water on the course it is still very tricky with how densely populated it is with trees, trees that often catch balls. Watch them carefully.
The course is relatively flat but strategically challenging, with narrow fairways and a series of small, well-bunkered greens that reward accuracy over power. Wind can play a significant factor, especially in the summer months, adding an extra layer of complexity.
The conditioning is generally excellent, particularly the greens, which are fast and true. Water hazards come into play on several holes, and tree-lined fairways force players to shape their shots carefully.
Royal Cape prides itself on traditional values and maintains a warm, professional environment. Staff are courteous and helpful, and the overall atmosphere strikes a pleasant balance between prestige and approachability.
