Right in the very north of the island of Mallorca lies this beauty of a golf course. Alcanada is nestled in between the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean and the hills that form a stunning backdrop to Alcudia and the surrounding areas.
Upon arrival you get a real sense that you’re about to experience something special. Arriving at the crack of dawn to be one of the first on the course you’re firstly greeted by the lovely huge wooden doors of the pro shop which is situated in a stunning building with rock walls and high wooden beams.
After a quick loosen up on the driving range I headed to the first tee. A tricky opening hole, 440 meters as a par 5 doesn’t seem like much but a tight, blind tee shot leaves you with a long approach to a green tucked in behind a creek. At this time of the morning a definite lay up. The second is no easier, a tee box lined with tall trees requires absolute accuracy off the tee leaving a tricky downhill approach to the green. The next few holes continue to weave up the higher part of the land over lush fairways and green that as the due started to lift started to speed up. Greens that I have become aware of are a signature of Rober Trent Jones Jr design, large complexes that are rarely flat or uninteresting.
The front 9 was awesome, the back 9 still very good but it starts to flatten out on the lower part of the course. At over 6,000 meters it is challenging! Look out for the views on the 7th and 13th tees, stunning drops to the iconic lighthouse in the background.
After your round head up to the restaurant for a drink, overlooking the Mallorcan coastline. Take it in, soak up the views, the exceptional conditioning and enjoy this fantastic golfing destination.
